A man in his 30s has been "squatting" a house in Arrecife for "five months", according to a witness who reported it to La Voz. The apartment is located in the Titerroy neighborhood and has become a tourist rental house. The citizen has taken the opportunity to "stay living in the apartment, which is owned by a bank", and has also begun to host tourists in one of the rooms.
Currently, the accommodation is advertised on the Airbnb platform, for which "the squatter asks 40 euros per night per person", a witness told La Voz. As can be seen in the advertisement, he offers the accommodation as a shared apartment with the "owner" and a room with a private bathroom and a lock on the bedroom door and access to common areas. "Accommodation located in a quiet residential area, 5 minutes from the center of Arrecife, the bus station and the Open Mall Shopping Center", the man has published.
According to the citizen, this man "has modified the address of the house to be able to rent it without raising suspicions." In addition, he has made "some modifications" inside in order to offer it on the Internet. "He changed the door, put up a gate, a camera and also an alarm", and "the bank also did work and remodeled it a couple of years ago", he pointed out.
The advertisement has led tourists arriving in Lanzarote to choose to stay in the apartment. When reviewing the comments and the score of 4.67 out of 5 given by the vacation tenants during their stay, they show that they have been "happy" with the services provided by him. "We felt very comfortable in the house!. The room was small but with everything you need, the bed comfortable and the apartment very clean. We recommend it!", one of the visitors has valued. In addition, they have all "positively" recommended the stay and have encouraged other users to choose the apartment as a future vacation accommodation on the island.
Regarding the situation of the squatter, according to the information La Voz has had access to, he stayed in the house because he could not find a home. For now, it is unknown if there has been a complaint to the Police.
