The island of Lanzarote has registered up to 9 people dead by drowning between the months of January to November 2022, referring to the Canary archipelago, the figures rise to 66 deaths for the same reason, according to data prepared by the association "Canarias, 1500 km de Costa". These figures represent an increase of 27% compared to the same period of time last year. In addition, to the 66 deaths registered, we must add 9 injured in critical condition, 21 serious, 39 moderate, 18 mild and 33 rescues.
In the rest of the islands, we see how Tenerife is the island that has found the most events of this type with 18 people dead by drowning, followed by Fuerteventura with 16 and Gran Canaria with 15. On the other hand, La Gomera has 5 drowned so far this year, the island of La Palma with 2 and El Hierro, with 1 while La Graciosa does not record any event of this kind.
Speaking only of the month of November, 40 people have drowned in accidents on the coasts of the Canary Islands, where 16 of them have ended up dying.
This mortality figure recorded in a month is the highest in the last ten years, surpassing the month of August 2017, which had 13 deaths and the month of December last year, with 12 people dead.
From January to November, 73% of the identified deceased were foreigners of up to 11 different nationalities: Poland (3), Germany (7), United Kingdom (1), Netherlands (1), Norway (2), Ireland (1), Portugal (1), Sahara (1), Italy (1), Argentina (1), Sweden (1) and Foreigners (5).
By age, 33% were over 60 years old; 34% were adults, and 3% were victims under age. By sex, 80% (53) of the fatalities were male, while 20% (13) were female.
By activity, 70% of the deceased were bathers, 9% fishermen, 7% water sports, 6% divers, and the remaining 8% corresponds to the other section.
The beaches continue to lead as the environment in which the most accidents with fatal results occurred, with 47% of the cases, followed by ports and coastal areas, 35%, swimming pools (7%) and natural pools, (11%).
In the afternoon, 71% of fatal drownings were recorded, while in the morning (24%) and at night (5%).
