"The development of more than a dozen social action projects, which include comprehensive care for women victims of gender violence, the management of the supervised apartment, the information center, training talks in educational centers, collection and distribution campaigns of food and Christmas toys, volunteer training with a gender perspective and specific advisory services requested by city councils, among others, have allowed the Mararía association to reach more than 4,100 people with its work".

This was indicated this Tuesday by its vice president, Carmen Delia Reyes, during the ordinary general assembly of the feminist entity, held in the Torrelavega Society. In the act, the current board of directors was also ratified to maintain their responsibilities, with the continuity of Nieves Rosa Hernández in the presidency.

The session opened with applause in memory of the former president of the Torrelavega society, Edmundo de La Hoz, and a warm thank you to the workers and volunteers of the association: “Despite the uncertainty and fear, they have continued in moments in which we did not know if Mararía could continue or not with its doors open, after 27 years. Thanks to them, we have achieved it”, congratulated the president.

For her part, Carmen Delia Reyes highlighted that during the pandemic, Mararía saw an increase in her work and the development of social care initiatives "in this complex period".

She also valued, as a novelty, the adhesions of shops and taxi licenses to the safe spaces and free of gender violence campaigns in Tías and San Bartolomé and the vindictive and awareness-raising actions online.

New projects

After the unanimous approval of the management and accounts of the past year, the president of Mararía, Nieves Rosa Hernández, informed the attendees about the new projects for the current year.

Hernández expressed her satisfaction for the renewal of projects with the Institute for Women and Equal Opportunities, the Canary Islands Institute for Equality, the City Council of San Bartolomé or the City Council of Tías and for the signing of other new ones, with the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands of the PROA project and with the Cabildo of Lanzarote for the management of a second supervised apartment. “All important services will continue to be provided throughout 2021,” she announced.

In the chapter of bad news, Hernández pointed out the high cost of food and personal hygiene products for solidarity distribution, having interrupted the supply from the Food Bank. “Now more than ever we must convey to society the need to support the most vulnerable families, who cannot even put a plate on the table,” she warned.
