The social and cultural association for women, Mararía, celebrated last Friday, during the annual assembly, its 30 years of advocacy and social work for women and families of Lanzarote, its contribution to female progress on the island and its willingness to continue adding progress on the difficult path of effective and real equality.
On the occasion of this anniversary, the president of the entity, Nieves Rosa Hernández, reported on various commemorative actions that will be carried out throughout the year. On June 5, Zebensuí Rodríguez's talk "The Eternal Desdemona, the woman in the work of Ángel Guerra" will be staged at the Insular Theater, which will be complemented by the performance of the piece "Las paces", directed by Quino Falero, which corresponds to one of the texts written by that same author and dedicated to the orchilleras.
The edition and presentation of the book "Steps of Jable and Volcano. 30 years of feminist journey in Lanzarote" which collects the main milestones of the association's trajectory over the last three decades, is another of the proposals of the extensive cultural program planned for this year, which also has the determined collaboration of the Publications Service of the Cabildo de Lanzarote.
Social concert
The Minister of Social Welfare and Inclusion of the first Corporation, Marci Acuña, opened the session with words of gratitude to the tireless effort of the entity, for its pioneering work in favor of equality and for its availability and permanent collaboration with the administrations.
"This Cabildo is committed to working hand in hand with the third sector; in this sense, I commit to continue advancing in the social concert with Mararía, so that its work does not depend on a political party or a subsidy, and has long-term guarantees of tranquility, stability and financing," he announced.
Regarding the balance of beneficiaries of the different services and actions of the association between the months of May 2023 and 2024, the total was 6,223 people, including attendees at talks and workshops to promote equality and training for volunteers with a gender perspective; users of the Information Center and comprehensive advisory services for Women, and lodging resources; and those registered in the numerous activities to promote equal rights and opportunities, awareness and prevention of gender violence carried out by Mararía throughout the year, in all the municipalities of the island.
A particularly celebrated issue was the availability of decent, spacious and modern facilities, which offer privacy to users and comfort to workers, after three decades of wandering through different premises in Arrecife.
And as is tradition in their assemblies, the Mararía board paid tribute to three of its veteran members; on this occasion, Mari Carmen Ramírez, Ani Bruñas and Maribel Navarro were applauded for their dedication to social and feminist work over many years and presented with a video summary of recognition images, a bouquet of flowers and a diploma.
