The farmer Manuel Peláez has started a new protest against the closure of street markets on the island, this time in front of the Arrecife City Council, where he has chained himself. In addition, on this occasion, this man has also decided to go on a hunger strike.
"Although not all the street markets are closed, because the one in Mancha Blanca is open, the ones in Arrecife and Teguise are not and I think it's absurd, because if one opens, the other can open too", said this farmer to La Voz, who already carried out a similar protest in September at the Cabildo.
Then, after the rebound in infections that occurred in August, the institutions decided to close the street markets, as they have done now, with the exception of the Tinajo City Council. However, the regulations of the Canary Islands Government with respect to level 4 of health alert in which the island is located, does not prevent the celebration of them, provided that 33% of the established capacity is not exceeded.

"The law says that the maximum capacity has to be 33%, but it can be opened, logically always with those health guarantees", says Manuel Peláez, who complains that the "lock" is always put on "the smallest", while large surfaces and shopping centers remain open.
"We try to give the best with our organic farming products, so we will have to put pressure to value this and end these absurd restrictions", said this farmer who, although he will leave the City Council tonight due to the curfew, says he will return this Thursday, to continue with his protest, with which he intends to reopen the street markets.
"I see it as complicated because I have spoken with the councilman, who has passed by here, and he has already told me that for the moment they do not plan to open, but we will see", he concluded.
