'Las Kellys' of Lanzarote officially presented themselves this Monday in Arrecife in an act full of demands. This group of chambermaids that has been spreading throughout Spain began its activity on the island a little over a month ago. With this act, they wanted to "make visible" their "problems" and express their demands to improve their working conditions.
The presentation took place at the city's Youth Center, where public representatives and representatives of different political formations attended, in addition to individuals who practically filled the stands of these municipal facilities. The act included the intervention of María Pazos Morán. This graduate in mathematics has been coordinating the research "Public finance and gender equality" since 2004, at the Institute of Fiscal Studies. She is also the author of the book "Inequalities by law" and is a member of the International Association of Feminist Economics.
During the act, the members of this group recalled that they do not belong to any political party or union, but rather a group of workers who are trying to claim, together, labor improvements for the chambermaids. Thus, they have related some of their experiences to show what their working conditions are and have advocated for the reduction of the retirement age, the end of the outsourcing of the housekeeping department in hotels, and the reduction of the workload of their employees. As a measure to alleviate their harsh working conditions, they have defended that the Tourism Law be revised, to "be able to link the category of hotels to the quality of work offered." "Las Kellys are not asking for the moon," they stressed.
