Lanzarote is the Canary Island that recorded the fewest earthquakes last year 2023. This has been revealed by data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN). Despite this, the Canary Islands suffered 26.8% of the seismic movements detected throughout the country.
The National Geographic Institute recorded a total of 7,523 earthquakes around the entire State. Of these, only 227 were felt by the affected population and the most intense occurred in the town of Vielha e Mijaran, in Lleida.
Despite this, the earthquake of greatest magnitude recorded last December had its epicenter in the sea, specifically 38 kilometers east of the island of Lanzarote. In this case, it was not felt by the local population either.
The greatest seismic activity recorded in the Canary Islands last year was concentrated on the island of Tenerife, with 621 earthquakes; followed by the movements from the Enmedio volcano (545), located between Tenerife and Gran Canaria; and the earthquakes that occurred on the island of El Hierro (84). After that, La Gomera (16) and those recorded in Gran Canaria and nearby areas (177).
Currently, the Timanfaya National Park still has volcanic activity, although it is in a state of rest. Meanwhile, there are hot spots that reach up to 600 degrees Celsius at a depth of 13 meters.
