Lanzarote does not forget the tragedy that occurred on November 28, 1978. The sailors aboard the Lanzarote fishing boat Cruz del Mar, after a day of work in the Canarian-Saharan fishing ground, were preparing dinner when they were assaulted. Seven of them lost their lives that night.
44 years have passed and the relatives, friends, acquaintances and representatives of the island's institutions came this Monday to the monument of Puerto Naos, "The Light that guides us" (a work by the artisan Juan Brito Martín), to carry out a floral offering.
At 7:00 p.m., the parish priest of the parish of San Antonio de Tías, Adrián Sosa Nuez, recited a response that was followed by all those present. Next, the members of the choir "Iris del Mar", from Valterra, sang the Salve Marinera, in honor of the patron saint of sailors, Nuestra Señora del Carmen. Then, it ended with the song "Cruz del Mar", recorded by Acatife on their first album in tribute to Cruz del Mar.
Immediately afterwards, the floral offering of wreaths and centers was made next to the monument. Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, one of the survivors, and Miguel Caraballo, president of the Cruz del Mar Association, thanked all those present and asked them not to forget these sailors and all those who died at sea.
