Lanzarote closed November with better unemployment data than before the pandemic

The island has 11,337 unemployed people, while in November 2019 there were 11,556 unemployed.

Lanzarote registered 640 fewer unemployed in November than in the previous month, with 11,337 unemployed on the island, which represents a decrease of 5.3% compared to October. In addition, this figure is lower than that reflected in the same month two years ago, before the pandemic, since Lanzarote closed November 2019 with 11,556 unemployed.

In comparison with the data from October 2020, unemployment has decreased by 38.4% in Lanzarote, since at that time the island had 18,390 unemployed.

With the data for the month of November, Lanzarote has now had seven consecutive months in which unemployment data has improved considerably. In fact, Lanzarote has 8,566 fewer unemployed than in the month of May, when the figure of 19,903 unemployed was reached.

The age group between 55 and 59 is the one that represents the highest number of unemployed in Lanzarote, reaching 1,773. However, this is a lower figure than in October, when there were 1,842 unemployed people in this age range.

According to data collected at the Data Center, the hospitality sector continues to be the one with the highest number of unemployed with a total of 2,709 unemployed people in November, not counting the data that includes the “rest of services”, which reaches 4,745. However, the unemployment figure in hospitality is considerably lower than that reflected in the month of July, when Lanzarote had 4,751 unemployed in this sector alone. 

In the Canary Islands as a whole, unemployment fell by 1,885 people in November compared to the previous month. This represents a decrease of 0.90 percent compared to the previous month. In this way, the unemployment lists in the archipelago include 206,431 people, according to data published this Thursday by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.

Regarding the year-on-year data, the Canary Islands has also experienced a decrease of 61,888 unemployed, which proportionally translates into a decrease of 23.07 percent.
