Several residents of La Graciosa registered this Wednesday at the Municipal Office of La Graciosa a letter addressed to the City Council of Teguise, the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Government of the Canary Islands, supported by signatures, to request "the completion of the sanitation network" of the eighth island.
In this document they state that the island currently does not have a sanitation network, which forces establishments and individuals to contract the services of a company that cleans the cesspools.
Thus, they request "an urgent meeting" with the administrations to ask for "an urgent and definitive solution" that completes the sanitation network "as soon as possible." In addition, they should take charge of hiring a specialized company "and with all the guarantees" to clean the cesspools of the residents, at no cost to the neighbors.
Therefore, they request a meeting with the institutions where they report both on the current status of the sanitation project and on the alternative measures that will be taken to prevent citizens from continuing to bear the costs due to "the lack of a proper service."
As is known, approximately eight years ago, work began on the construction of a treatment plant in the area near the mareta, as well as a sewage network through the streets of Caleta del Sebo. Finally, this work was halted in 2018, after the declaration of emergency that protected it was considered inadmissible.
"After five years of waiting, and six million euros buried in the sand," last December, the Government of the Canary Islands announced the declaration of regional interest to the sanitation works of La Graciosa.
Likewise, four months ago, the same Government reported that the procedures had been initiated to have the specifications that would allow the works to be executed and that they hoped that this summer all the permits would be in place to give the green light to the works of the new sanitation system.
