The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancor, on behalf of the Island Corporation, has conveyed his pain and desolation for the death of the member of the Scientific Committee organizing the five editions of the MICRO International Conference by the University of Versailles, Juan Baztán.
The condolences to the family have been extended to the global scientific community, which loses one of its most committed, passionate and wise figures.
The scientist died on Friday afternoon after falling down the stairs of the Casa de Los Arroyo in a tragic accident, as reported by La Voz.
Baztán, co-founder of the Marine Sciences For Society network, in collaboration with the Biosphere Reserve of Lanzarote, was the seed of the island's commitment to the fight against plastic pollution and promoter of the Congresses that have been held to bring together research in this area, the last of which ended on Friday afternoon.
His work over the last two decades has been and will be a fundamental pillar to advance in a new United Nations Treaty for the fight against plastic pollution, which could materialize in the coming months.
