The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Public Health, issues warnings from the Plan of Preventive Actions of the Effects of Excess Temperatures on Health in different islands, to reduce the effects on people's health associated with excessive temperatures and coordinate the institutions of the Canary Islands involved: care and emergency centers, and municipalities affected by the forecast of alert situations, in collaboration with the Spanish Meteorological Agency AEMET.
In this way, there is a red warning for high temperatures in the municipality of San Bartolomé until Wednesday, October 11. In addition, an orange warning is also announced until October 11 in Yaiza and a yellow warning in Tinajo and Tías.
Historical records
Sunday, October 8, resulted in three historical records, those of the highest minimum temperatures at the Gran Canaria airport, Lanzarote and Santa Cruz de Tenerife stations, in the tenth month of the year.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) details that at the Gran Canaria airport the thermometer did not drop below 27.7 degrees, exceeding the 26.6 degrees of the previous record in a month of October in the historical series that goes back to 1951.
At the Lanzarote airport the minimum was 27.6 degrees, four tenths more than the previous mark, recorded in 1983.
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife the minimum this Sunday was 26.1 degrees, one tenth more than in October 1983. In this case, the historical series goes back to 1920.
Aemet emphasizes that from September 29 to October 8 all days have been a warm record for their date, something unprecedented in Spain since at least the 70s of the 20th century in any warm episode.
