Lanzarote has been the place chosen by the German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz to enjoy the Christmas holidays.
Scholtz arrived on Wednesday afternoon at the César Manrique-Lanzarote airport, aboard a German military plane from Berlin. He is expected to stay in a villa in Playa Blanca with his family.
Lanzarote has been on several occasions a place of rest for European kings and leaders who have chosen the mild temperatures of the Canary Islands to spend their holidays at different times of the year. They have not only enjoyed their summer rest on the island of volcanoes, but also during Easter and winter.
This is the first time that Scholz has traveled to the Canary Islands since he assumed the presidency of the German Government, but not the first time he has visited Lanzarote, an island he knew before taking office, according to sources consulted by EFE.
Since Spain regained democracy, the social democratic leader is the fourth German chancellor to travel to Lanzarote. Helmut Schmidt, Helmut Kohl and Gerhard Schroeder did so before on an official or private trip.
His predecessor, Angela Merkel, was also a regular visitor to the Canary Islands, but in her case her choice to spend a few days of rest on the islands was always La Gomera.
Lanzarote is a regular destination for the holidays of several European leaders. The Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, spends a few days of rest every summer in La Mareta, as José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero did before, who is still a regular visitor to the island, and David Cameron chose it twice to disconnect during Easter Week when he was prime minister of the United Kingdom.
