Doctor and former mayor Elisabeth de León will be in charge of kicking off the patron saint festivities of the capital's Titerroy neighborhood, in honor of San José Obrero. The celebrations will begin on Monday, April 27 with the proclamation of who was "the first female mayor of the municipality", as highlighted by the association.

Born in 1953, De León is the fifth daughter of six siblings. She studied primary school at La Destila school, began high school at the Arrecife Agustin Espinosa institute, and then finished it at Blas Cabrera Felipe. Later, she studied medicine in La Laguna, where she married, had two children and finished her studies. Afterwards, she returned to Lanzarote, where she has practiced until now at the Titerroy Health Center, for 25 years now.

The Neighborhood Association defines Elisabeth de León as "woman, mother, doctor and finally politician", an area in which she "became the first mayor of the island's capital, a period in which the bicentennial of the constitution as an independent municipality of Arrecife and the first woman to belong to the Board of Ports of Las Palmas was celebrated".

The Titerroy patron saint festivities will last a week, concluding on Sunday, May 3.
