Cicar has incorporated into its fleet the replica of the BMW vehicle that César Manrique painted in 1990 for this German firm. The vehicle presentation took place at the César Manrique Foundation headquarters and was attended by the CEOs of Cicar, brothers Pedro and Mamerto Cabrera; the president of the César Manrique Foundation, José Juan Ramírez; the president of BMW in Spain and Portugal, Manuel Terroba; the honorary consul of Germany in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, Roland Mager; and the CEO of Canauto, Antonio Armas.
With the approval of the FCM and the authorization of BMW, CICAR joins the commemoration of the centenary of the birth of César Manrique, reproducing the BMW 730i painted by him in 1990. The replica, made in vinyl, has been captured on the current model of that BMW and reproduced in eight units that CICAR will incorporate into its rental car fleet throughout the Canary Islands over the next three years. The 2019 BMW is the 740 model.
César Manrique is the only Spanish painter who has contributed with his work to the artistic initiative BMW Art Car Collection, a prestigious compilation in which the best artists in the world have participated, such as Alexander Calder (1975), Roy Lichtenstein (1977), Andy Warhol (1979), R. Rauschenberg (1986), David Hockney (1995) or Jeff Koons (2010)
The history of these cars converted into canvases began in 1975, when a BMW 3.0 CSL painted by Alexander Calder was part of the 24 hours of Le Mans. Since then, the new additions to the BMW Art Car Collection have been made at irregular intervals over the years, always with unique works of art. Several of the car models are normally exhibited in the BMW Museum in Munich as part of its permanent collection.
