Canarias is the third autonomous community with the most women victims of gender-based violence in Spain. In total, the number of women victims of gender-based violence grew to 2,672 in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 7.7% compared to the same period last year.
The judicial bodies of Canarias registered 2,974 complaints of gender-based violence in the first three months of 2026, which represents an increase of 4.6% compared to the same period in 2025. This is according to data provided by the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence of the General Council of the Judiciary.
Of the total complaints filed, 244 were filed in Lanzarote, the third Canary Island with the most complaints, only behind Gran Canaria (1,340) and Tenerife (1,208).
Thus, Canarias, with a rate of 23.4 women victims of gender-based violence per 10,000 women, is behind the Balearic Islands (28.7) and Navarra (24.5), as the autonomies with the most judicially processed cases of gender-based violence. In contrast, the Spanish average is 12.3 women victims per 10,000 women.
The data shows that of the total victims, 1,967 were Spanish and 705 were foreign. Notably, ten were minors, eight of them Spanish and two foreign.
In judicial declarations, 329 women requested to testify as witnesses, 176 Spanish and 153 foreign.
Protection orders and sentences
The data provided by the Canary Islands courts reveal that 383 protection orders were requested, of which three were inadmissible, 128 were denied, and 252 were granted.
Meanwhile, between January and March, 1,012 dismissals were issued, most of them provisional, as well as 681 sentences convicting the aggressor and 25 where the aggressor was acquitted. Among the persons prosecuted, a total of 708, 484 were Spanish and 199 were foreign.
