The Canary Islands detected 1,367 cases of suspected child abuse in 2020, of which 625 were reported through social services, 380 through the Security Forces, and 284 through the health sector, according to data from the Unified Registry of Child Abuse of the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030.

These data, according to the Minister of Social Rights of the Canary Islands Government, Noemí Santana, are "worrying", so she considered that we must "act forcefully." To do this, she indicated that we must have the technical support of the teams of professionals who work in the care of children and young people.

Santana stressed that a society in which its "weakest members, and therefore most in need of protection, are subject to abuse, is not a healthy, just or egalitarian society."

"Child abuse is a social scourge that worries us a lot and that we must make every necessary effort to eradicate from a society that considers itself protective of its weakest members, such as our children and adolescents," she said.

For this reason, she added, the technical conference has been organized during which she has released these data, in which various technical works carried out by the General Directorate of Protection for Children and Families in collaboration with the Canarian Institute of Equality and other collaborating entities, financed within the framework of the State Pact against Gender Violence, have been presented.

For her part, the general director of Protection for Children and Families, Iratxe Serrano, highlighted the "innovative nature" of the technical works and presentations presented within the framework of this conference, which can be consulted on the website of the Ministry of Social Rights, Equality, Diversity and Youth.
