Canal Gestión Lanzarote has warned of the "critical situation" in La Graciosa with the water supply, and has announced that it has had to activate the "urgent action" protocol in the face of a new break suffered by the underwater pipeline that carries drinking water to the eighth island, which is the sixth so far this year.

The company announces that for 72 hours, at least, it is forced to reprogram the usual supply on this island, as an extreme measure, "to ensure that all areas receive at least a minimum of water." In addition, it warns that the existing reserves in the only two tanks in La Graciosa "are also at the limit as a result of the high demand recorded in recent days."

From Canal Gestión Lanzarote they assure that "all possible human and material resources have been arranged to undertake the repair", but that despite this "this will not be possible until Wednesday, when the team of specialized divers that is needed arrives in Lanzarote." In addition, they point out that at that time, "it will be necessary to take into account the state of the sea and the currents that run through the well-known Río, to specify the start and duration of the works." "It is necessary to emphasize that the current regulations require having, at least, five divers and a support boat to undertake this type of work," they point out from the company.

"Given the impossibility of finding another alternative to the supply, given the conditions and particularities of La Graciosa, the company is in the need and obligation to request the collaboration of the population present on this island these days so that consumption can be more controlled and sustainable, and thus try to minimize the consequences of this important breakdown", they request from Canal Gestión.

Reason for the break

Canal Gestión emphasizes that until the divers can descend to the point where the break has occurred, "the scope and reason for it cannot be known." However, and taking into account that this is the sixth incident that has occurred in this pipeline so far this year, they advance that "it is evident that the state of fragility and obsolescence that it presents, given its age."

Canal Gestión Lanzarote assures that it has warned the Lanzarote Water Consortium, owner of the service and all its infrastructure, "of this problematic situation on several occasions over the last few years, presenting reports in which the urgent replacement of the aforementioned pipeline was requested", a request that it points out that to date "has not been attended to." "This will mean that in the future water cuts will be more frequent until the Water Consortium undertakes the indicated works," the company warns.

Canal Gestión Lanzarote affirms that "deeply regrets the inconvenience that the residents of the neighboring island may suffer", and assures "to put all its means at its disposal so that the service can be restored to normal."
