The tests taken the day after the end of the festivities of the coastal town of Lanzarote have forced the closure of the beach until new results are obtained

Prohibido el baño en la playa del pueblo de Caleta de Famara

The Teguise City Council has prohibited bathing in the so-called beach of the town of Caleta de Famara after detecting the presence of Escherichia coli, a type of bacteria present in the human and animal intestines that can cause infections in people who are exposed to contaminated water.

The Public Health analysis was carried out on this beach last Monday, September 1, just the day after the culmination of the Caleta de Famara festivities, as reported by municipal sources to La Voz.

That weekend saw different events with a large influx, such as several festivals and the famous water party of the coastal town. Already at the beginning of the week, it was also surrounded by controversy due to the presence of bottles, cigarette butts and other types of garbage in the natural protected area of El Jable.

Although the tests were taken last Monday, the results were not obtained until this Wednesday, September 3, so the beach was open to the public since then despite being already infected by this bacteria.

Sources from the council have also confirmed to La Voz that during the festivities and the celebration of sporting events it is common for some visitors to urinate on the shore of the beach, with the environmental impact that this entails. However, the council cannot affirm that the origin of the bacteria is this.
