The city of Arrecife hosted this Tuesday the solemn act of raising the national flag, with the participation of the highest commanders of the State Security Forces and Corps in Lanzarote. This is a ceremony that has been held for 179 years in all bases, barracks and ships of the Spanish Armed Forces, both in national territory and in the most remote places where their units are deployed.

The event, held next to the central building of the Arrecife City Council, was attended by the mayor, Yonathan de León; the island director of the General State Administration in Lanzarote, Pedro Viera Espinosa; several councilors from the Government group; as well as commanders of the Civil Guard and the National Police. The ceremony was presided over by the colonel chief of the Marqués de Herrera barracks, Rafael Marco Magallón.

Coinciding with the maneuvers on the island of the Canarias XVI Battalion, a picket of honors from the Sappers Battalion XVI, a hoisting squad and the War Band No. 3 of the Canarias XVI Brigade participated in the hoisting to the sound of the National Anthem. Numerous neighbors accompanied the event in an atmosphere of respect and solemnity.

During the ceremony, the history of the Spanish flag was recalled, adopted as the Royal Pavilion in 1785 under the reign of Carlos III and declared the National Flag in 1843 by Royal Decree of Queen Isabel II.

Law 39/1981 establishes in its article 3 that the flag of Spain must fly outside and occupy a preferential place inside all buildings and establishments of public administrations, which reinforces the relevance of acts such as the one held today in the capital of Lanzarote.
