Arrecife celebrates the dismissal by the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands of the appeal filed in 2019 by the owner of the land of the "Islote del Francés". The owner of the land requested compensation of 200 million euros from the capital's city council for the public use of the surface.

The Councilor for Urban Planning of the Arrecife City Council, Maciot Cabrera, explained in an interview this Tuesday on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero, how the Council has received the decision of the Superior Court of Justice. "A priori it seems like good news for Arrecife, it proves the municipal defense right," he acknowledged.

If the owner's request had been accepted and in the event that the city council had had to pay the 200 million euros, Cabrera stressed that it would be a "very bad news" for the municipal budget. "If so, it would have caused significant damage to the municipal coffers," the councilor stressed.

New use for the land in Arrecife

In addition, he makes clear the intentions of the Council regarding the future of the use of the land. From urban planning they affirm that the property should be used by citizens. "We understand that this land must be of municipal ownership and must be enjoyed by all the residents of Arrecife," Cabrera clarified. A land that is considered by the city council to be "fundamental" for the capital of Lanzarote. "We are clear that this land bag is key, very important for Arrecife," he added.

From the city council they anticipate the possible initiative that is being considered for the use of the property in the capital: the creation of a new cultural space in the city. "It could become a new Islote de Fermina," the councilor anticipates. With some changes and adding extra services. "Bigger and with many more alternatives," Cabrera added.

The land has two disputes, one of them "resolved favorably and the other, still remains to be resolved," the councilor revealed. The last of the disputes has been based for some time on the 100 meters to be able to build. "The litigation with costs is still pending resolution, but we will see how it ends," Cabrera concluded.
