Antonio Corujo was awarded the Ajei Prize for his folklore work in the XII José María Gil Memorial, which was held on Friday in San Bartolomé, within the framework of the patron saint festivities. The Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente Park was filled at this event, according to the City Council.

Corujo, who was accompanied by his family, neighbors and the musical Corporation, was visibly moved. The event began with a performance by Tahod, followed by the Municipal School of Folklore and Guadarfía.

"Antonio Corujo receives the Ajey Prize for folklore work at this event. He is an authentic artist and a well-known figure inside and outside this island, as well as a folklorist and reciter. Who doesn't also know him for his professional side, as a barber and hairdresser? Completely self-taught, he always observed what was done in daily life," they said during the event.

Corujo comes from a family of folklorists and his children have also continued the tradition. "That is a great value of this municipality, to perpetuate traditions, especially those linked to the music, song and dance of the land, from those extraordinary Ranchos de Pascua, which our elders remember so much, and which move Antonio for his experiences," they said.

The recognition occupied the final part of the event. The most emotional moment was the projection of a video about Antonio Corujo and his career. At the end of the event, they presented him with an award, a sculpture, as a tribute from San Bartolomé. The honoree's wife attended this event, as well as the mayor of San Bartolomé, María Dolores Corujo, who was accompanied by Esteban Gil, and the councilor Áurea Mauri. Félix Hormiga and the Association of Law and Justice also gave their support to Corujo. The recognition ended with a musical tribute from a parranda, formed by members of Antonio Corujo's family.

Night of parrandas

And, precisely, this act gave way to the night of parrandas in San Bartolomé, with the performances of Pa'l Porrón, El Golpito and Raíces, which lasted until 4 in the morning.

Many neighbors wanted to participate in this event and enjoyed one of the "most endearing" nights within the patron saint festivities, according to the City Council, which appreciates the "high participation and the pleasant festive atmosphere", of a night dedicated to music, the timple, dance and parrandas. For this occasion, the ventorrillos had tapas for one euro.
