A sports outbreak leaves 20 Covid infections in Lanzarote

Four other outbreaks have been reported on the island this week, while the Canary Islands as a whole has registered 103

The Canary Islands has reported 103 new Covid outbreaks this week, of which 5 have been registered in Lanzarote, 49 in Tenerife, 47 in Gran Canaria and two in El Hierro. In the case of Lanzarote, four of the outbreaks have less than ten associated cases, but the fifth has already affected 20 people.

According to the Ministry of Health, this outbreak originated in the sports field and is the one with the highest number of people affected in the Canary Islands. The other sports outbreak detected in the last week has been registered in Tenerife, with five infections, and originated in a gym.

By area in which they have occurred the outbreaks in the archipelago, 41 are family, 35 social, 15 work-related, five educational, four in socially vulnerable groups, two sports and one hospital.

"In general, all outbreaks have less than 10 associated cases except for seven outbreaks, among which the sports outbreak in Lanzarote with 20 cases stands out, two educational outbreaks in Tenerife with 18 and 12 people affected, one family outbreak in Gran Canaria with 16 cases, one work-related outbreak in Tenerife with 12 people infected and one social outbreak in Gran Canaria with 11 cases", the Ministry specifies.

The five educational outbreaks, all with family ramifications, have been reported in Tenerife and have 18, 12, eight, eight and three associated cases.

Among the outbreaks detected in the workplace, two in Tenerife stand out, one linked to the agricultural sector with family ramifications, with seven associated cases, five of them workers and two family members, and another in the construction sector with three people affected.

The hospital outbreak, which is already "inactive" according to the Ministry, was registered in the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Insular Materno Infantil, in Gran Canaria, and affected four people, two of whom died.

In addition, 42 old outbreaks that remain open are still being monitored and some of them have grown in number of cases. Among them, a work-related outbreak with family ramifications in Tenerife that already affects 98 people, a sports outbreak with family ramifications in Gran Canaria with 68 associated cases, two educational outbreaks also with family ramifications in Tenerife and Gran Canaria with 61 and 49 people affected, respectively, and a social outbreak in El Hierro with 56 associated cases.

 

Outbreak on a ship 

In the last few hours, an outbreak has also been reported among the sailors of a ship docked in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The outbreak affects three people, one of whom is admitted to the plant in the Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín and the other two people are doing the isolation in an accommodation establishment, following the protocols established by the General Directorate of Public Health. 

Currently, the Canarian Health Service is in the process of sequencing the samples taken from these three people to determine if they correspond to the Indian strain.
