The director of the Canary Islands Institute of Equality (ICI), Kika Fumero, and the mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, inaugurated this Tuesday the sculpture in homage to all the victims and resilient women of sexist violence created by the artist Cintia Machín Morín.

Kika Fumero contextualized the installation of this sculpture in the ICI project of creating a violet memory, contemplated in the Protocol of institutional action of the Government of the Canary Islands in case of femicides, with the purpose of "remembering all the victims of gender violence and keeping in mind the reason for our daily fight against sexist violence."

The mayor of San Bartolomé thanked the ICI for the location of the sculpture in the municipality he presides over, and in his speech he valued "the work and involvement of the municipality in the fight against sexist violence through policies on equality that are not reduced to a single day". "Ending gender violence is a daily struggle, throughout the year."

The Councilor for Equality of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Myriam Barros, also thanked Lanzarote for being the island chosen by the ICI for the placement of the first statue in the Canary Islands in homage to the victims and resilient women of gender violence, which she hopes will serve "to raise awareness and for all of us to be a little more violet". She also highlighted the collaboration and willingness shown "at all times" by the City Council of San Bartolomé and by the artist Cintia Machín so that this monument has become a reality.

131 calls for gender violence from Lanzarote in October

In the first 10 months of the year, 970 calls were registered from Lanzarote to the 112 gender violence victim care service financed by the ICI. The month with the most incidents was August, in which 142 calls were registered, well above the average of 97 calls per month, but the last month of October was also especially serious and 131 calls were received, of which 77 were emergencies, which means imminent danger for the victim. Regarding the type of incident, 41 were for incidents of physical violence, 3 of them with the aggravating factor of sexual assault.

The Emergency Device for Battered Women on the island had to be activated between January and October on 160 occasions (in October alone it was activated on 28 occasions, almost double the monthly average for the year). 577 police resources were mobilized (74 in October), also well above the average, and 60 health resources (10 in October).

By municipalities, in October 23 calls were made from San Bartolomé, well above the monthly 7. It was, therefore, after Arrecife, the municipality with the most alerts in the past month.
