“They won't be able to beat us.". That is the message that the Lanzarote nurse Begoña Hernández has launched, after recounting some episodes of threats that health workers have suffered in recent months from 'anti-vaxxers'.
In her case, she explained that she experienced a tense situation on a vaccination day without an appointment at the Deiland Shopping Center, last August. “Two people threatened us and wanted me to collect some reports that they gave me”, she explained. However, she says that they "ignored" and continued doing their job. "It is clear that, if it weren't for the vaccine, imagine what would have happened”, defends this professional.
In addition, she pointed out that her fellow nurses from Gran Canaria and Tenerife have also suffered several episodes of threats from anti-vaccine groups, especially in the vacuguagua that travels through the capital islands.
"The state of mind is no longer the same"
Begoña Hernández, who belongs to the Titerroy Health Center and is a member of the Nursing Association of the island, has also spoken on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero about the situation that health workers are still experiencing with the pandemic. “We have a sustained fatigue over time, and the state of mind is not the same”, she says, pointing out that her day-to-day is "around Covid".
“It is such a large monopoly, that all our functions, everything we did before and that we are slowly recovering, flows around Covid”, she explains. However, she assures that despite the pandemic, they have not stopped doing work outside the virus, such as performing analytics, health education talks in schools or home care.
Hernández hopes that as the year 2022 progresses, the life we had before the pandemic will be recovered "little by little". “We have to normalize it”, she pointed out, although she admits that she does not like the term “gripalizar” Covid, since it produces a greater number of deaths and complications than the common flu.
