A group of volunteers removed this Sunday about fifty kilos of garbage and waste accumulated from the dunes of El Risco beach. Despite this large amount of garbage, they assure that there are still approximately another 150 kilos to collect.
According to them, the day went very well and they managed to make significant progress in a partial removal of the waste accumulated for months in the dunes, separating the garbage left on the beach in raffia bags and closing them with zip ties so that they do not disperse with the wind.
In addition, they covered the waste with a net they brought specifically for this purpose. They also cleaned another coastal area north of the dunes, where there was a large amount of ropes, nets, and a lot of plastic.
The pile of garbage on the beach had waste from the sea that some people have deposited there, such as pitch, ropes, fishing nets, large drums, etc., but also recent garbage from people who have come to the beach or to walk and upon seeing the pile of garbage interpret it as a place to dump their own.
"It is essential and urgent to eliminate any deposit of garbage in this area because people will continue to leave their filth there," they argue.
The fifty kilos of waste that these five people carried to the top of El Risco were deposited this Monday at clean points in Lanzarote, classified by type of material to facilitate their recycling.
"We appreciate the collaboration of the Department of Environment of the Haría City Council and the Cabildo of Lanzarote. In a next outing, all the garbage that still remains on the beach will be removed. Let's take care of our nature, coasts and beaches are not landfills," they conclude.
