A video published on TikTok shows several tourists queuing in Las Grietas, located in Tías, to take a photo to post on social media. Due to the narrowness of the path, some of these visitors end up climbing on the walls of Las Grietas and stepping on them.
This poses a major problem for a unique and singular place that, due to the large influx of tourists it receives daily, is in serious danger of disappearing. Stepping on the walls or grabbing them with your hands causes them to wear down, as they are made of sand.
In fact, some of the hundreds of cars that park in an improvised parking lot day in and day out do so by ignoring the parking limits, even taking the cars to the path that leads to Las Grietas.
This problem of overcrowding is increasingly aggravated by social media and the "posing" that comes with it to have a photo like other people have. Its spread on platforms like TikTok has made this place viral to the point that it has become a must-see place for tourists visiting the island.
In addition, on many occasions, emergency services have had to come to rescue people with injuries caused by falls, sprains, broken bones, or trauma.
