The Guardamar Urania of Salvamento Marítimo rescued this morning south of the Canary Islands 44 men and one woman in a canoe in which there were five corpses.
As reported by the Efe Agency and confirmed by La Voz, Salvamento Marítimo could not recover the bodies of these five people due to the rough sea, as part of the archipelago is on pre-alert for waves.
In this regard, it is estimated that the number of victims could be much higher, because the survivors had been at sea for twenty-six days.
Sources from the Security and Emergency Coordination Center (CECOES) 1-1-2 have added that the precarious vessel was sighted around 6:50 p.m. by Helimer, the Salvamento Marítimo helicopter, and located 65 miles southwest of the port of Arguineguín (Mogán), in the south of Gran Canaria.
After being transferred to the aforementioned Canary dock, the survivors arrived around 4:15 a.m. in Arguineguín, where they received medical attention on the dock.
