Half of Europe is awaiting the partial solar eclipse next Wednesday, August 12, and although the phenomenon can be observed from anywhere in the archipelago, the Elder Museum of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and other science museums, as well as the Government of the Canary Islands, have chosen several points on the islands to set up eight "Cosmic Watchtowers" with educational activities, specialized personnel, and the distribution of approved glasses to follow it with safety, and the selected location on the island of Lanzarote is the La Santa Seaside Promenade.
The special Atalayas device was announced by the Minister of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Jessica de León, and will allow the partial solar eclipse of August 12 to be followed from different observation points distributed across the eight islands for the safe enjoyment of residents and visitors.
The minister highlighted that "this cycle of three eclipses offers us a unique opportunity to continue positioning the Canary Islands as an international benchmark in astronomy and scientific dissemination. We want it to be an experience open to the entire population, with all safety guarantees thanks to the distribution of approved glasses and recommendations for responsible observation," said De León.
In a statement from the Government of the Canary Islands, the managing director of the Elder Museum, José Gilberto Moreno, emphasized that, although in the Canary Islands the maximum obscuration of the Sun will reach 77%, which will be an exceptional opportunity to enjoy this astronomical phenomenon."
Science communicators will accompany the public throughout the activity, explaining the different phases of the eclipse, the movement of the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth, and answering attendees' questions to turn the observation into a learning experience.
The mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, thanks the Elder Museum and the Government of the Canary Islands for their willingness to place La Santa in the best location on the island of Lanzarote to enjoy the eclipse with safety and information. The City Council will set up a stand on the Maritime Promenade, just above the steps, where science communicators will show the eclipse with their telescopes from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and will distribute approved glasses to enjoy the eclipse in Tinajo with complete safety.
