The secretary of the Cabildo of Lanzarote took the floor this Thursday, February 12, at the end of the plenary session in which the Corporation's budgets were approved to announce that, foreseeably, he will not continue in office in the coming weeks and to reveal that he is involved in a legal proceeding, something that, as he stated, "had not happened to him in his almost 36 years of career in the institution".

“Most likely, I will not be here in the February plenary,” he stated before the assembly. He clarified that it is not a voluntary resignation, but rather the ordinary functioning of the national competition for positions of national habilitation. The vice-secretariat has already been filled and, as he explained, the final resolution could occur in a matter of days.

The until now secretary assured that he will remain linked to the Cabildo of Lanzarote, where he will perform functions "where the governing group and the corporation think I can best provide my services", recalling that there are currently vacancies in the institution.

Immersed in a legal proceeding

Furthermore, he took the opportunity to report on another matter: "In 35 years, now going on 36, in the Cabildo, I had never found myself in a judicial proceeding. Well, it turns out that now I am in one, accused of hiding documentation from the opposition, from a specific group, from a file that I have never had in my possession, that I do not have the power to have, and that belongs to INALSA," he stated.

According to what La Voz has been able to ascertain, the procedure stems from a complaint filed by the PSOE in the courts due to the lack of requested information regarding a file. The socialists have maintained that their action is not directed against any official, but against the actions of the Cabildo. Specifically, the conflict is framed within the decision adopted in the early days of the current term to withdraw the procedure initiated against Pedro San Ginés and the lawyer Ignacio Calatayud to try to recover the money from judicial costs of proceedings in Inalsa.

During his speech, the secretary expressly asked the political groups not to use civil servants in partisan confrontation. "Do not play with civil servants in their political oversight work. Do not use civil servants," he insisted.

He recalled that throughout different legislatures he has had to issue "complicated" reports for governments of different stripes, as well as in situations of no-confidence votes or changes in the Presidency of the Cabildo. "That is part of our work, it is normal. I studied Law to practice or be a civil servant," he pointed out.

However, he regretted that in recent months he has had to prepare several reports related to political control and that this situation has led to his inclusion in a judicial proceeding. "It has been very hard for me," he confessed, after a January that he also described as "complicated" on a personal level due to the death of his father.

The secretary concluded his speech by thanking the personal support received from some councilors and reiterating his request: “Take advantage of us so that things are done well, so that we advise you, so that the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the island move forward, but not for political guerrillas.”
