The Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Migdalia Machín (Coalición Canaria), reported this Wednesday in a parliamentary commission that the works for the conservation of the facade of the Casa Luis Ramírez, known as the Modernist House of Famara or Casa del Cura, in La Caleta de Famara, may begin in "approximately" fifteen days. The regional contribution amounts to 149,000 euros and covers the total foreseen cost.
This announcement comes just a few days after the socialist deputy Marcos Bergaz registered a question in the Parliament of the Canary Islands to know when the rehabilitation work on the facade would begin and after years of controversy surrounding the future of this historic building.
Not to mention, last summer a group of neighbors placed a sign on the facade that denounced the inaction of the Church, owner of the property, and the Teguise City Council and held both institutions responsible for the possible collapse.
The project responds to the advanced state of deterioration of this modernist building, the only one of its kind in Lanzarote, and includes works for structural consolidation, repair and cleaning, consolidation of the walls, restoration and reproduction of decorative elements, recovery of the carpentry and execution of the final finishes.
Work financed with public money for a property of the Diocese of the Canary Islands
Machín has highlighted that "the Government of the Canary Islands has assumed one hundred percent of the cost of a necessary action to conserve the Casa del Cura". In relation to the start of the works, she explained that "the latest available information places its start in approximately fifteen days".
The financing is channeled through a direct contribution for reasons of public interest granted to the Diocese of the Canary Islands, owner of the property and responsible for the material execution of the works. The works must be completed before October 31, 2026.
According to the Government of the Canary Islands, this restoration project "responds to a demand promoted by the Teguise City Council and its mayor, Olivia Duque, to advance in the conservation of the Casa del Cura".
The minister pointed out that the action will allow "to address the problems presented by the facade and recover architectural elements that require specific attention", based on a defined technical project for its conservation.
The execution of the works corresponds to the Diocese of Canarias, as promoter of the action, and must be developed in accordance with the approved technical project.
Machín has underlined that "the conservation of heritage needs commitments that translate into concrete actions" and recalled that, in this case, the Government of Canarias has fully guaranteed the necessary resources to undertake the planned works at the Casa del Cura.
