The works, executed by the Department of Public Works, and completed at the end of last year, have renovated the urban image, accelerating the restoration of different residential buildings, and the construction of new buildings, as well as the opening of new businesses and hotel activities in Arrecife. In addition, the modernization of a section of Calle Canalejas, carried out by the Arrecife City Council, is contributing to the revitalization of this area of the island's capital.

These visible improvements will be joined next September, with the start of the new academic year, by the opening of the new accesses to the Agustín Espinosa Institute, the oldest in Arrecife and Lanzarote, which is about to commemorate its centenary.

Until now, the students of this secondary school had their main access through Coronel Bens street. Once the semi-pedestrianization works on Canalejas street were completed, the IES has carried out works to open a new access through this side, which will allow students safer access without traffic. The new door, under construction during this summer, allows students and teachers to access the interior of the building through the sports area.

At the beginning of this summer, the mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, visited this student center together with the Island Director of Education in Lanzarote, Carmen Pellón, where he was able to share with the director of the center, Antonio Alonso Bonilla, these measures that have been carried out directly by the center and Education.

During a visit to the city, last spring, by the Minister of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, Poli Suárez, the mayor conveyed to the minister this request to adapt new accesses to the IES Agustín Espinosa, in line with the municipal project to provide safe school routes in the capital. The area of the Nieves Toledo school, in the neighborhoods of El Lomo and Valterra, and now the IES Agustín Espinosa, already have these safe environments, minimizing the presence of vehicle traffic.

The IES Agustín Espinosa is also a pioneer in Lanzarote with its semi-attendance Baccalaureate for adults, and the institute has launched to promote public communication and social skills through guided tours of its students with the exhibition 'Knowing La Marina de Arrecife', thanks to a transfer from Marina Calero of the panels that are exhibited, and inaugurated at the end of June, in which the mayor Yonathan de León was present.
