The Franz Weber Foundation has again requested that camel rides on the island cease, after a new video that has gone viral on social networks and that shows a controversial situation when a dromedary falls to the ground with two tourists on top in Yaiza.

This video has accumulated tens of thousands of views on Instagram. The non-governmental organization points out that this video "shows again the inadequate treatment that camels receive in Lanzarote and how, when one of them falls, the reaction of the workers is far from a supposed professionalism and care for animal welfare."

In this line, he added that "the camel ride business is costing Lanzarote a continuous deterioration in its public and tourist image, with videos and warnings that show the need to stop this type of activity", as the Franz Weber Foundation has once again claimed.

Thus, he has stated that "this deterioration is also reinforced by the inaction of the island administrations, since the Yaiza City Council has been several months without delivering documentation on the case of the mistreated camel calf in 2023, which caused the Transparency Commissioner of the Canary Islands to threaten administrative sanctions."

The Foundation has accused the Cabildo of Lanzarote of not having taken any measures to guarantee the integrity of the animals and "has limited itself to asking for aid for a tiny sector in relation to the island's economy."

Already in 2021, FFW pointed out "serious shortcomings in the welfare of camels, with a veterinary report that warned about their living conditions, the long days of transport to which they are subjected and the incidents that occurred. No administration investigated the warnings made by experts."

In this context, the international NGO believes that the videos and images of the treatment suffered by camels "will continue to have a significant impact thanks to the growing influence of social networks and the greater awareness of inhabitants and visitors of Lanzarote, increasingly involved in favor of sustainable, ethical tourism that does not involve animal suffering."

The naturalists also demand answers from the Ministry of Ecological Transition for events that have been taking place in a National Park, where high standards of commitment to biodiversity, the environment and the animals themselves are presupposed.
