The César Manrique Foundation (FCM) will host this Thursday, September 24, at 7:30 p.m., the round table titled “Ageism in older adults. Prejudices, discrimination, and prevention”, in which Montserrat Celdrán and Francisco Gómez Nadal will participate, and will be moderated by journalist Saúl García. The event will take place in the Sala José Saramago (La Plazuela, Arrecife) and will be broadcast live on the FCM's website and YouTube channel. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.
This space for reflection on ageism has been organized by the FCM with the aim of raising awareness about age-based discrimination, especially that which affects older adults, and contributing to the identification and prevention of the use of ageist language that infantilizes and depersonalizes. The projection of stereotypes and prejudices about older adults undermines their identity, diversity, and dignity, which hinders healthy aging. Awareness of ageist behaviors—including institutional and self-inflicted ones—which are widespread in the societies of our European cultural context, should serve to identify them, prevent them, and actively confront the situations of injustice they generate, fostering more supportive and respectful intergenerational relationships.
During the round table, Montserrat Celdrán and Francisco Gómez Nadal will offer an approach to the concept of ageism, analyzing how it manifests in daily life and what its main psychological and social consequences are. Likewise, they will reflect on the causes that favor the persistence of ageist attitudes, including those that older adults themselves may reproduce towards themselves or towards other people of their own generation.
In the meeting other discriminations will also be addressed, such as sexism or racism, which further accelerate the dynamics of social exclusion towards certain people. Finally, it will be debated whether we are prepared, both individually and socially, to face the growing longevity of the population and how to move towards more age-inclusive cities and communities.
Montserrat Celdrán holds a PhD in Psychology and is an associate professor in the Department of Developmental and Educational Psychology at the University of Barcelona. She teaches in the official master's program in Psychogerontology and conducts research in the field of aging psychology, with a special focus on family relationships, the participation of older adults in volunteering, ageism, and unwanted loneliness. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council against Loneliness (CACS) of the Municipal Strategy against Loneliness of the Barcelona City Council, as well as the Advisory Council of the Strategy for a Long-Lived Society and a Full Life of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
Francisco Gómez Nadal is a journalist, essayist, human rights activist, and cultural manager. He has worked in some of the main media outlets in Spain, Colombia, Panama, and Nicaragua, and has collaborated with newsrooms in Venezuela, Bolivia, and Brazil. He is currently the manager and general coordinator of the UNATE Social Group—comprising UNATE (the Permanent University of Cantabria) and the European Seniors' Patronage Foundation (PEM)—. UNATE is a non-profit organization founded in 1978, a pioneer in work on aging and old ages, offering non-formal education primarily for people over 50, promoting their active lives.
Furthermore, Gómez Nadal is a member of the associative bookstore La Vorágine. He cooperates with different processes in Latin America through Human Rights Everywhere (HREV), an organization he chairs globally. He is the author of eight books, and his texts have been included in various collective works.
