The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, through the Animal Welfare Department, is developing an extensive program of activities from July 24 to 31 on the occasion of the International Dog Day Week, aimed at raising citizen awareness about animal protection, responsible adoption, and respectful coexistence with companion animals.
The program will tour different municipalities on the island, also reaching La Graciosa, with awareness-raising actions, workshops, audiovisual campaigns, and a day dedicated to canine education, consolidating the island corporation's commitment to animal welfare and responsible ownership.
The Minister of Animal Welfare, Armando Santana, emphasizes that "the program is born with the aim of continuing to build a society more committed to respect for animals." "Education and awareness are the best tools to prevent abandonment, promote responsible adoption, and foster harmonious coexistence between people and their pets," he adds.
Among the main actions planned is the installation of information stands in Arrecife, Uga, Teguise, La Graciosa, Tías, and Tinajo, where data on adoption and responsible ownership will be offered, with the collaboration of animal protection associations from Lanzarote. During these days, bracelets and stickers with awareness messages against animal abandonment will also be distributed free of charge.
The program also includes the creative workshop 'My Best Recycled Friend', which was held on July 25, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, at the Camel Interpretation Center in Uga. The activity is aimed at people of all ages and will combine creativity with education in values related to respect for animals and recycling.
The Exemplary Canine Citizen Lanzarote event will also take place, an educational initiative that aims to make canine education a tool to improve coexistence and animal welfare. Participants will be able to complete an evaluation circuit with their dogs based on basic coexistence, socialization, and self-control skills, without a competitive nature and always from a perspective of respect for the animal.
The dogs that pass the tests will receive the Exemplary Canine Citizen Lanzarote diploma, a distinguishing mark and will become part of the Honorary Registry of Exemplary Canine Citizens. Santana emphasizes that he hopes all activities “serve to involve all of society in animal protection”.
Likewise, throughout the week an audiovisual campaign will be broadcast on social networks with three pieces focused on the fight against abandonment, responsible adoption and the benefits that coexistence with dogs brings, especially among the elderly and people with disabilities.
