A reader has captured an impressive image of a Portuguese man o' war (Physalia physalis), also known as the Portuguese frigate, on Famara Beach. The photograph was taken during the morning of this Sunday in the municipality of Teguise.
This species is usually confused with the jellyfish family, but it does not belong to it, so it is also known as a false jellyfish. According to the Government of the Canary Islands regarding this specimen, "it is widely known for the sail shape of the float, it is very painful and even dangerous. In the Canary Islands, it usually appears between January and June and is capable of creating real invasions."
According to the Canary Islands Biodiversity Data Bank, they can be found on all the islands of the Archipelago.
