The International Museum of Contemporary Art, MIAC - Castillo de San José will join the celebration of International Museum Day 2026 next Monday, May 18, with a special open house day that will turn the old Fortress of Hunger transformed by César Manrique into a space for creation, participation, and citizen encounter.
The program will revolve around the theme proposed this year by the International Council of Museums, “Museums uniting a divided world,” and will feature the active participation of students from different educational centers in Lanzarote, live performance, and the inauguration of a large-format collaborative mural.
“Museums must be living, open spaces connected to society. This day perfectly reflects that idea: young people creating, guiding, participating, and using art as a tool for dialogue and collective reflection,” highlights Ángel Vázquez, CEO of the Centers for Art, Culture, and Tourism of Lanzarote.
Collective mural for reflection
The day will begin at 10:00 AM with a guided tour for a group of students from the Pancho Lasso Art School. Later, at 11:00 AM, there will be a guided tour for a group belonging to the Mararía Association.
One of the central axes of the day will be the inauguration of the collaborative mural created by students from IES Blas Cabrera Felipe, directed by professor and artist Rosa Vera. It will be from 11:00 AM onwards.
The piece, ten meters long, takes as a reference the Sustainable Development Goals linked to the reduction of inequalities, peace, and collective alliances. The project turns the museum into a living workshop of critical thinking and artistic creation, also integrating a participatory proposal open to the public: an intervention wall where visitors can leave phrases, ideas, or messages related to the aspiration of “uniting a divided world.”
The exhibition will remain open until June 21 in the temporary exhibition hall of the MIAC.
Student guides and performance
The day will also feature the collaboration of IES Zonzamas, whose students from the subject of Guide, Information, and Assistance, taught by Carlos Marco, will carry out guiding tasks within the museum, between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, accompanying the public on the tour of the different spaces and activities.
Additionally, the DIM will include an artistic performance that will take place at 2:30 PM in the Temporary Exhibitions hall, reinforcing the dynamic and participatory nature of a celebration that seeks to bring the museum closer to all citizens. Access will be free and open throughout the day.
