The Fisheries Directorate of the Government of the Canary Islands has put out for public display, for the second time, the project for the installation of 56 marine cages between the César Manrique Airport and Arrecife.

This republication is given as an official review after groups, fishing associations, companies and citizens have rebelled against this installation promoted by Yaizatún SA.

Although the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) has announced that information regarding the project can be requested, as well as submitting any allegations deemed appropriate, to access the entire project you have to travel to Gran Canaria by appointment.

This announcement comes two months after the then President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Dolores Corujo, met with the population to calm the waters around the instigation of aquaculture farms in Playa Honda.

The choice of the area dates back to the approval of the Regional Plan for the Management of Aquaculture in the Canary Islands (PROAC), approved in 2018 by Coalición Canaria. At that time, it was determined that the marine strip of Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Tías was a suitable place for the installation of these farms.

In addition, since 2001 Yaizatún SA exploited the fish farms installed in Playa Quemada. This location, after the publication of the PROAC, was no longer allowed as an exploitation. In August 2021, the license that the company had been renewing to use this marine land expired.

Since 2020, using the new PROAC, Yaizatún asked the Fisheries Directorate to exploit the coastal area between the airport of Lanzarote and the island's capital with the installation of half a hundred fish farms. The approval of the regional government, responsible for this matter, was added to the resounding refusal of the local population and the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
