A German tourist shared a video on the social network TikTok in which he threw a large stone into the water in the Los Hervideros area, in the southern part of Lanzarote.
Although the video was published, the tourist who shared it ended up deleting it from his profile on this social network, probably motivated by the criticism in the comments of the publication.
This recklessness can have a serious impact on the island's terrestrial and marine biodiversity for several reasons. On the one hand, by throwing a large stone, the shock wave it causes when falling into the water, along with the abrupt change in pressure, can damage the swim bladder of fish, stun them, and even kill them if the impact is very close.
Furthermore, it can destroy marine habitats on the seabed, such as spawning grounds, and also crush marine fauna and flora on the seabed. Likewise, the action of moving stones alters the natural environment, which accelerates erosion.
These types of recklessness are punished with fines, something especially serious in protected areas, where economic fines can range between 5,001 and 200,000 euros.
