To the lack of waiters in Lanzarote, we must also add the lack of lifeguards, a sector that is having problems finding staff who want to be employed to provide service in the swimming pools of hotels. The company VitalOcio, which operates on the island, is one of those affected by the shortage of employees.

The coordinator of Lanzarote in the company, Naomi Hernández, explains that this problem is due to the "conditions with transport", since "people who are prepared do not want to work." She recognizes that "where it happens to us the most is in Playa Blanca," given that "if the buses are full, many times they do not pick up people." And that is the main reason why "they do not want to work," she adds.

"The hotels do not offer accommodation service to lifeguards, only to animation workers who come from the Peninsula or other countries," something that further aggravates the difficult situation. In addition, she points out that "there are no prepared people on the island," because they have not taken "the sufficient courses to train lifeguards" focused on hotels, a question that further aggravates the situation.

"It is difficult to contact trained people, and if we manage to contact them, they never return the call," she admits.

From the company "we do not know what to do," reveals Hernández, right now, "it is difficult for us to match the schedules with the people we have." Although "we already have active employees, but we need more," demands the coordinator.

With the arrival of summer and the heat, "right now the hotels require more hours of service, the days are longer and people spend more time in the pools," says Naomi. "On top of that, new hotels are opening," she highlights as a dilemma that worries the sector in the face of the coming months of July and August.

"We have spoken with foundations, Emerland, Red Cross, even with the Cabildo of Lanzarote," adds the coordinator of VitalOcio without the problem being solved, so they continue "asking for help," concludes Hernández.
