Fred. Olsen Express closes the 2024 activity of its program of awareness and beach cleaning actions in the archipelago with the removal of more than 200 kilos of waste at Playa Flamingo, in the municipality of Playa Blanca, Lanzarote.
The shipping company brought together more than 130 volunteers this Thursday, including students from IES Yaiza in Lanzarote and IES Corralejo in Fuerteventura, as well as members of the Non Stop Divers diving center, other experienced divers, Limpiaventura volunteers, and company employees. Among the waste found, nearly 2,000 cigarette butts, an oxidized bicycle, and hammock mattresses stand out.
This day, organized jointly with Terramare Medioambiente and the Office of Environmental Participation and Volunteering (IDECO), is part of the 'In Harmony with the Sea' project, where Fred. Olsen Express brings together the more than 70 actions related to sustainability that it develops and with which it also promotes social participation to value, raise awareness, and conserve the natural environments of the Canary Islands.
The head of marketing at Fred. Olsen Express, Marina González, explained that “with this day we are closing the second edition of our coastal and seabed cleaning project on different islands. The initiative, which began in 2023 and which we will also carry out in 2025, has the objective of helping to raise awareness among citizens, especially focusing on young people through collaboration with education centers, also giving our employees the possibility of getting involved.”
For his part, the president of the Terramare Medioambiente association, Germán Beltrán, highlighted that “we are closing the second edition of this initiative, in collaboration with Fred. Olsen Express, with the satisfaction of seeing the great involvement and the good predisposition of all those volunteers who have made it possible. Preserving the uniqueness and richness of our seas has been the engine that has driven us to work in each of the cleanings that we have carried out on the islands.”
The project seeks to promote social participation as a tool for coastal conservation, promote the preservation of marine ecosystems and species, and serve, at the same time, to raise awareness among residents and tourists of all ages about the importance of caring for the marine environment.
This cleaning action aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which guide the activity of Fred. Olsen Express, in particular with objective 14 (Life Below Water) and 17 (Partnerships to achieve the objectives), as well as with the Canary Islands Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030.
