"Buggies destroy Lanzarote. Shame on you!" can be read for a few weeks now on a graffiti painted on a wall on the LZ-1 road, near Guatiza (Teguise), in the north of Lanzarote. This demand has been joined by the appearance of a sign with the message: "Tourist, yes. Buggies, no"

The appearance of these messages adds to the criticism from residents of Guatiza who for months have been denouncing the environmental impact of tourist excursions with buggies and the destruction of rural roads, the alteration of trails, and the adverse effects on the biodiversity of the area caused by these excursions.

These citizens reported last September that buggy excursions through the municipality have a direct impact on "the quality of life of residents" and cause "daily disturbances".

Added to this is the fact that in mid-November, the Cabildo of Lanzarote made public the fine of 4,500 euros against a tourism company that entered the protected natural area of Los Ajaches, in the municipality of Yaiza, with a caravan of buggies, for endangering vulnerable species that inhabit the area.

An ordinance on public display

From November 21st to December 21st, the Teguise City Council is holding a public exhibition of the ordinance that regulates the transit of buggies, quads, trial bikes, enduro bikes, cross bikes, and off-road vehicles through the rural areas of the municipality.
