Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa informs that the incident related to the presence of vinyl chloride detected in the Mala Health Center is located in the interior installation of the health center and not in the public supply network.
The detection occurred within the periodic controls for monitoring the quality of drinking water. The Mala Health Center is one of the usual sampling points in the municipality of Haría. The sample was taken at the end of April and, after the analytical results were known at the beginning of May, a surpass of the established parametric value for vinyl chloride was confirmed.
From that moment on, the corresponding procedure was activated, and both the health center and the Canary Islands Health Service were informed. The controls carried out allow us to determine that the water supplied by Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa meets the required quality conditions and that the incident occurs in the interior installation of the health center.
The regulations differentiate between the public distribution network, the responsibility of the operator up to the point of delivery, and the interior installations of the properties, the conservation and maintenance of which correspond to their owners. According to the available information, the Canary Islands Health Service is undertaking actions to replace and condition the affected installations of the center.
Water quality also depends on interior installations
Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa reminds users of the importance of maintaining interior networks, cisterns, and tanks in homes, communities, and buildings in good condition. Their conservation and cleaning are fundamental to preserving water quality once it leaves the public network and enters a private installation.
This message coincides with the awareness work carried out through the initiative “More tap, less plastic,” promoted by the Biosphere Reserve with the participation of specialists and organizations linked to water quality and health surveillance, which emphasizes, among other aspects, the importance of the proper maintenance of private installations.
Aguas de Lanzarote y La Graciosa will continue to carry out surveillance controls of the network and consumption points, precisely aimed at detecting possible incidents, determining their origin, and facilitating the adoption of necessary corrective measures.
