This Thursday, August 7, at 9:30 p.m., MOTHER returns to Televisión Canaria with a story that takes us directly to the heart of the eighth island, La Graciosa. Viewers will learn about the life of Enriqueta, a woman "made of stainless steel" and deeply in love with her island of La Graciosa. Enriqueta embodies resilience: a matriarch who always prioritized ensuring there was food on the table at home, even if it meant sacrificing daily affection. She was the glue of her family, the first link in the chain to overcome many challenges, and a constant support for friends and neighbors.
The presenter Alicia Suárez travels with the entire MOTHER team to La Graciosa to talk with Enriqueta. The program highlights key moments of her childhood and youth. She never went to school like her friends because her father forbade it. At 7 years old, she began taking care of 7 goats, and at 14, she was already taking care of 200 goats. She will remember her trips to the nearby island of Lanzarote crossing the Risco de Famara, a 400-meter high feat that she climbed up and down carrying products, even pregnant, and always barefoot with the dignity of saving her shoes to arrive immaculate to the towns.
The audience will have the opportunity to enjoy original videos of the daily life of the smallest inhabited island of the Canary Islands, at a time when communications were more than rudimentary. Shellfish gatherer, fisherwoman, and tireless worker in her bar, Enriqueta took on the challenge of supporting her family, the animals, and the restaurant even when her husband fell ill, all by herself. "But they never lacked a plate of food," she says in the program with a satisfied look.
Her life has been an example of tireless struggle. She built a guesthouse from scratch with just six rooms with the help of her entire family and cooked for her own and for the island's visitors with the same generosity. Despite not having been able to go to school, her ingenuity and determination led her to learn to add in her own way and to give her children the education that she could not enjoy.
Enriqueta, who never managed to celebrate her birthday due to lack of economic resources, is now the first to sign up for any celebration, enjoying the life that cost her so much to build. Her home has finally become the meeting point and refuge for her children and grandchildren.
Enriqueta's story is an immense lesson in tenacity and pride for all the women of the Canary Islands. A woman from La Graciosa who owes nothing to anyone and sculpted with effort and dignity. MOTHER is proud to transmit to the viewer personal stories like Enriqueta's, full of passion and authenticity, inviting reflection on the importance of the roots and the legacy and dedication of the island women.
Through intimate narratives and valuable historical images of the archipelago, MOTHER delves each week into the essence of the Canarian woman through the stories of those who have marked an era and forged the character of their families. The format delves into stories of effort, dedication, and overcoming, paying a well-deserved tribute to the maternal figure who, even in the most adverse circumstances, knew how to cement values, educate her children, and keep the family together in a social context crucial for the reconstruction of Spain.
Isen Media produces this program commanded by the young director Josh Acosta. MOTHER culminates its first season with an excellent reception from the public that has followed it weekly on Televisión Canaria. Registering an accumulated audience of 441,000 Canarians, 20.2% of the population of the Islands. An average of 6.6% of screen share and an average of 30,000 viewers in each chapter certify the success of a format that has shown the lives of ten mothers who are a sign of the deep and unique character of the Canarian matriarchy. A living tribute to stories of women that transcend ten families, ten surnames.
