The conservation association Ecologists in Action Lanzarote has presented allegations to the draft of the Special Plan for the Protected Landscape of La Geria, considering that the more than three million visitors that the island receives per year “are sufficient reason to preserve this space with strict measures, that prioritize the care of the environment against any type of event or tourist activity.” According to them, "it is necessary to respect the traditional cultivation in holes and the protection of the original vineyards."
In addition, they allege that the dry stone socos of La Geria constitute an example of ancestral agricultural architecture, whose technique is recognized by UNESCO: “This is a unique and singular construction whose survival we must guarantee.” They denounce that it is increasingly common to incorporate buildings with an alignment and shape that has nothing to do with the original construction “and whose purpose is none other than to achieve greater productivity in the sector, with the introduction of machinery and the lucrative sale of the extracted rofe.”
The ecologist association urges to bet on the well-being and empowerment of the residents, in order to consolidate the subsistence time of the destination, with the creation of a tourist tax that directly affects those who own farms, with the aim of incentivizing and helping the conservation.
Regarding mobility and roads, Ecologists propose, among other measures, that the LZ30 between Mozaga and Uga and the LZ56, between Volcán El Cuervo and Mancha Blanca be only for transit, with the exception of residents or farmers, and facilitate the displacement to the different visitable points through the public transport service or shuttle buses, which avoid traffic congestion and maintain the vision of a diaphanous and orderly landscape.
