The ACAIP-UGT and CSIF unions have called a rally this Tuesday, July 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the gates of the Lanzarote prison after the brutal sexual assault on a psychologist in the Seville II prison.
This act is part of a protest that will be carried out in all penitentiary centers dependent on the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions after the serious events that occurred on July 8 at the Seville II Penitentiary Center (Morón), a psychologist from the center was physically and sexually assaulted during an individual interview by an inmate, with numerous records of violence and sexual crimes, who remained, "inexplicably", in a "respect" module.
"This is not an isolated incident: in recent years there has been an increase in sexual and physical assaults on prison workers, so it is urgent to take action. In Spanish prisons there is an average of one assault every 16 hours, more than 1,000 in the last two years", they say.
Faced with this escalation of conflict, the convening unions demand "an effective and immediate response from the administration, the review and improvement of the internal classification of inmates, the clarification of responsibilities, the provision of adequate emergency and warning systems in the event of incidents and the legal recognition of authority agents of penitentiary public employees".
"These events reflect a structural deterioration of the penitentiary system derived from a "goody-goody" internal classification, which seeks more statistical makeup than to address a penitentiary reality in a context of increasing prison population. Tolerating it is to normalize institutional violence and violate the right to safe work", they point out.
"It is not just about supporting a colleague, but about defending the dignity, safety and working conditions of the entire group", they conclude.
