Canaries and Yaiza extend camel rides in Timanfaya for one year until a new agreement is processed

The Ministry of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Yaiza City Council have agreed to extend for one year the agreement for the management of the camel transport service in the Timanfaya National Park. This decision comes in the midst of the campaign by the Swiss environmental organization Franz Weber Foundation to end camel (actually dromedary) rides in Lanzarote, which has already gathered more than 43,000 signatures.

This agreement between both administrations began four years ago, on August 19, 2022, entrusting the management of the camel transport service in the National Park. This concession was due to expire in four years, but could be extended for another four years if requested before the expiration date.

The Yaiza City Council requested the extension of the agreement for another four years on April 30 and committed to executing it correctly, complying with technical, safety, and hygiene conditions.

Fifteen days later, the Directorate of Timanfaya National Park issued a report stating that the Directorate General of Natural Environment had promoted the preparation of a technical report and, after obtaining the results, indicated that the content of the agreement should be "reviewed and updated," incorporating new measures and technical criteria.

Therefore, the drafting of a new agreement is being processed, which will also adopt the conclusions and proposals derived from this technical report. Thus, the extension will be for a limited period of one year, while the new agreement is drafted and processed.
