The town of Las Breñas took to the streets this Saturday, June 21, to celebrate its Big Day of festivities, praising the figure of its patron saint San Luis Gonzaga, to whom faithful and companions dedicated the traditional solemn function, officiated by the parish priest of Yaiza Jonathan Almeida, and subsequent procession led by the southern Municipal Band.
Back in the square, the Rubicón Folk Group paid its particular tribute to the Saint with an emotional repertoire of touch and dance, which included a folía, a sorondongo and a malagueña; the Yaiza Choir did the same on the way back to the temple, where fifteen voices directed by Nuvi Tavío offered pieces such as “Die Jesus” and “Te seguiré, Señor”, filling the church with solemnity and harmony.
After the religious and musical retreat, the recreation was given way and laughter flooded the tent with the hilarious performance of the Canarian humorist Dani Calero, who conquered the public with occurrences about daily life, drawing on relationships, the mother-in-law or the children, among others. The Big Day, which also included a lively children's party in the morning, ended with a festival enlivened by Vocal Force, Banda Nueva and a DJ.
On Friday night, neighbors also enjoyed a magnificent evening with a taste of tradition thanks to the Folk Meeting that the town of Las Breñas offers each year to its renowned poet Víctor Fernández Gopar, who filled the square with folías, seguidillas, isas and malagueñas, as well as some polka and mazurka, performed by the Janubio Parranda and the Timbayba Group, both directed by Clotildo Martín.
In addition, throughout the week, the festive atmosphere had been felt in the town with popular championships, storytelling, theater, workshops and the performance of the illusionist from Majorera, Raúl Magic.
The Councilor for Festivities of Yaiza, Daniel Medina, thanks the participation of the residents of Las Breñas, as well as other payments from the municipality, and encourages them to continue enjoying “the music and our traditions in the coming days in Femés, which will take up the baton to honor San Marcial”.
