The Directorate General of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared a state of alert for high temperatures throughout the archipelago starting this Thursday. The Canary Executive has based this decision on the prediction of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which warned at the beginning of the week of the arrival of the first heatwave of the summer in the islands.
The alert situation will be in effect from this July 30 at 11:00 AM. Initially, Aemet has established high temperature warnings for Gran Canaria (orange in the south and yellow in the midlands), as well as for Tenerife (yellow in the metropolitan area and in the southern part of the island) for this Thursday. For Friday, Fuerteventura and La Gomera will be added to these warnings, in addition to Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
For now, Lanzarote and La Graciosa, La Palma, and El Hierro are excluded from these warnings issued by Aemet, but they are included in the high temperature alert reported by the Canary Islands.
The Directorate General of Emergencies has indicated that this heatwave will have "an initially greater impact" on the eastern islands, especially Gran Canaria. Furthermore, from Friday and throughout the weekend, the situation is expected to intensify.
The meteorological models analyzed by the Canary Government show the entry of a mass of warm and dry air of African origin. The entry of African air may be accompanied by weak calima, mainly in the eastern islands, without significant concentrations of dust on the surface being initially predicted.
Thus, Aemet predicts that this Thursday at noon temperatures could reach 30 degrees in Lanzarote and exceed 34 in Gran Canaria, with the heat being most intense during the central hours of the day. For Friday, maximum temperatures will be around 34 degrees in Tías and 33 in Arrecife, and will be above 30 degrees in most of the territory, except in Tinajo. Meanwhile, minimum temperatures will be around 20 degrees.
For Saturday, maximum temperatures will remain above 30 degrees, being lower again in Tinajo. On Sunday, maximums of up to 34 degrees are again predicted in Tías. The forecast is that the heat will continue throughout the following week.
