The Dermatology section of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital has increased its medical consultation activity by 24.5 percent in the last three years, going from 8,342 consultations attended in 2022 to a total of 10,388 in 2025.
This increase in healthcare activity has been accompanied by the implementation of new organizational methods that allow for the optimization of resources and the improvement of patient care and follow-up.
New specific nursing consultations
The incorporation of two new specific nursing consultations stands out in the improvement of the section, as they have allowed for an expansion of healthcare capacity and facilitated the follow-up of certain patients without the need for direct specialist intervention in all cases.
This is the case of the teledermatology consultation, which allows specialists to perform assessments and diagnoses based on clinical images, facilitating the management of certain lesions and streamlining the healthcare process. This system contributes to optimizing the daily work of professionals and promotes more agile care, by allowing prioritization and referral to in-person consultations for cases requiring specialized assessment.
The second nursing consultation is focused on analytical control and follow-up of patients with stabilized chronic treatments, to ensure continuous monitoring, and allows for checking the evolution of their treatments without the need for specialist intervention at each check-up. In this way, nursing professionals play a fundamental role in healthcare continuity and in optimizing the activity of Dermatology consultations.
The development of these consultations and the treatment room has represented a significant reinforcement of the nursing role. In 2025, a total of 9,854 nursing consultations were carried out, compared to the 1,969 that took place in 2022, a figure that quintuples the activity developed in this period.
The head of the Dermatology section, Enric Piqué, highlights the value of new consultations to improve response capacity. "Teledermatology allows us to perform an initial assessment of lesions through images and establish, when possible, a diagnostic orientation and prioritization of care. In this way, we can identify which patients need an in-person evaluation by a specialist and which can be attended to or followed up through other care pathways.”
Collaboration with Primary Care, key to improving care
Dermatology activity has also been strengthened in recent years by collaboration with Primary Care professionals. In this context, family doctors from health centers have received specific training to improve the assessment of dermatological lesions, detect possible pathologies, and determine which patients require referral to hospital consultations.
This coordination between Primary Care and Hospital Care allows for an initial assessment of patients in health centers, promotes early detection of certain lesions, and improves referral pathways, so that individuals who need an evaluation by a specialist can access it more efficiently.
The manager of Health Services of Lanzarote, Pablo Eguía, highlights the reorganization of care activity that contributes to streamlining patient care. "The incorporation of nursing consultations has allowed us to adapt care to the needs of each patient and improve the efficiency of the service.”
He also emphasizes the importance of coordination between care levels "when primary care professionals have the training and tools to perform an initial assessment of dermatological lesions, the detection and follow-up of patients is facilitated, and the referral of cases that need specialist evaluation is improved, resulting in a more efficient care model."
Specialist training
Alongside healthcare activity, the Dermatology section of the Molina Orosa Hospital maintains an important teaching and training activity. Each year, Dermatology residents from other hospitals in the Canary Islands, such as the Insular University Hospital of Gran Canaria or La Candelaria, undertake training stays at the center to expand their knowledge and gain experience in Dermatopathology, a mandatory subspecialty for dermatologists in which Lanzarote specialists accumulate experience and knowledge. On the other hand, its specialists accompany the residents of Family and Community Medicine of the Lanzarote Management in their training.
The section is currently made up of four physicians, four nursing professionals, and two Nursing Care Assistants (TCAE).
